Dennis Leary has been a shameless thief of Hicks material and mannerisms for many years, going all the way back to when Bill was still alive. Leary is a cheap hack, and I have a permanent boycott on anything he's involved with.

late to the thread, but my opinion on it anyway:

I was just talking about this very thing over breakfast last weekend, and made someone at the table very angry when I pointed out that 99% of No Cure for Cancer was a cheap rip off of Hicks. About the only thing I can think of that might be original would be the Nyquil bit.

Theres one thing to take a bit that you like and incorporate it. I hear snippets of Hicks and many other comedians occasionally while watching standup. A piece here and there is fine. A wholly 'nother thing is to shape most of your act around someone elses work and not even credit them.

One of the saddest things is the differences by which Hicks did his routine and Leary did(does)

Leary comes off as mean and spiteful, and Hicks, to me, came across as compassionate.

As far as Ron White goes, some of his stuff may be similiar, but he (Ron) has his own voice.

    He's not the only one.

a lot of Doug Stanhope's material echoes Hicks (but admittedly, he is funny as hell)

I haven't seen a LOT of Ron White, but it seems he's of the "edgy comedian clad in all black, smoking and drinking on stage" variety

Stanhope has personally told me that Bill is one of his biggest influences, and that his act is similar.Only cause they have the same views on Government and drugs and whatnot.

Ron White is coming from somewhat a similar mindset, I think, though he's trying to package himself to fit into that inane "Blue Collar Comedy" package (hopefully he'll bust out of that soon, since he's head-and-shoulders above those other guys.....especially the loathsome "Larry the Cable Guy"). I think White and Hicks come from the same general area and time, so some similarity probably comes from that as well. Ron White is pretty damn funny, I have to admit, and it seems very genuine.

It's not just that Leary rips of Hicks - he does it in the service of EVIL. Hicks was one of the greatest comic geniuses of all times - so one can hardly blame any aspiring comic for being influenced by him. But Leary is a right-wing tool who just apes certain aspects of Bill Hicks in order to try to appear cool.

Bill Hicks apparently despised Leary. Hicks once claimed that he even quit smoking just to see if Dennis Leary would, too.

I copy Bill almost everyday! It makes me laugh and others around me!
"Sorry" imagine Bills face and shrug!
I have always wanted to become a Bill Hicks cover act...too bad I don't look like him...
It be great to do his stuff in front of people as a cover act, wonder if you could legally! Anyway!!

If I understand what Bill was trying to do he had a message and if others would like to spread that message...well "at least it rocks"...

      Peace

I think a Bill Hicks cover act is a great idea. You don't have to look like him. His message was (still is) the important part.

Building on the idea, how about a Sam Kenison-Bill Hicks-Lenny Bruce tribute show?

one of my fondest memories as a kid was seeing Sam and Bil both when Bill still lived here in Houston. This was right when Sam was making a name for himself and he and Bill use to work on their acts together at this place called the Comedy Workshop. I wish ?I was old enough to see more before Bill died

a tribute show would be fun

Here's one of Sam's most hilarious "jokes" - it's "the last time Jesus said anything to anyone":

I could just see Hicks doing a set:

"If I find out wherever I go after I die that you weasels decided to tramp around like Elvis impersonators doing the 'Bill Hicks' revival tour, <insert line only he can come up with>! 'Hey look! It's Bill Hicks! Wasn't he in Police Academy?'"

Ever thought that he had a reason for not telling ANYONE but his most immediate family that he didn't have long to live?
