Hello, all...
I feel that as much as anything else, this tribe should be about keeping the spirit of Bill alive, as well as holding high him and his work.
With that in mind, I'm asking, what makes you Bill Hicks angry? One of your favourite regular pub or water cooler rants? It doesn't matter if it's similar or the same as one of Bill's flashpoints... it doesn't even really matter if it's something that's quite specific to you... just change the names, and share the rant. There's something quite universal about indignant rage, anyway.

Re: What makes you Bill Hicks angry?
Wed, July 21, 2004 - 8:02 AMreality tv shows
lack of personal responsibilities, and the lawyers who are only too willing to get rich off of taking it away from us.
Heres a perfect example that came up while I was living in Colorado. They wanted to change the law so that the bartender is at fault if a person drinks too much and gets in an accident driving home. WTF?! Don't you have to be 21 to drink? Isn't that because the law deems you to be an adult and RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR OWN ACTIONS? If so, then YOU are RESPONSIBLE, not the bartender. I'm sick of people readily giving up their personal rights so that someone else can guide their lives. Its in the same vein as people wanting to censor tv because they cant be bothered to parent their children and pay attention to what they consume. They want the tv to raise their kids.
Stupid lawsuits in general. There was a time when people might not of known that smoking was bad for you. If you don't know coffee is hot, but you are able to drive through and get the coffee and place it on your croch, then thats your fault, and if there was any grace you would be rendered sterile. What kind of moron thinks that McDonalds is health food? Come on... -

Re: What makes you Bill Hicks angry?
Sun, August 29, 2004 - 12:37 AMI used to work at a club in the late80s/early 90s and got to see Hicks perform probably a dozen times. The inside cover of his first disc (Dangerous?) has a photo of him in front of the place.
Anyway, during Gulf 1, between sets, I asked him where his yellow ribbon was.
"Around my dick." he said.
Seeing him live was like Band of Gypsies or getting rolfed. Nevertheless, he seemed like a sweet, gentle guy off-stage.
Another time, I was carrying a bus-tub of glasses to the bar and, when he got out of the way, I said, "Thank you, Mask Man." He seemed genuinely pleased that a waiter was hip to his relationship to Lenny Bruce.

Re: What makes you Bill Hicks angry?
Thu, September 9, 2004 - 11:00 AMRealised that I hadn't contributed to this, beyond starting it off.
My main beef at the moment is one that probably wouldn't have got Bill agitated, as it seems pretty urbane and middle-class, but:
Incompetence, and it's ability to find it's way into positions of authority. As bad as inherently evil institutions, corporations etc are, I think that incompetent ones probably do more damage. They certainly create more waste and genuine unpleasantness in day to day life.
At least when you encounter something evil, you can choose to either dodge it or punch it straight in it's face. Ingrained incompetence is slippery, and if you risk living anywhere where people are, you just can't dodge the incompetence bullet.
Bad liars are another thing that gets me, and it's tied to the same thing. Bad liars seem to be getting in power everywhere. At least sometimes a good liar can fool you into your comfort zone, and sometimes a really good lie is almost admirable (Chris Morris is my touchstone for that statement). But a bad liar leaves a bad taste in my mouth, because as well as the deceit, there's the insult to ones intelligence. I hate having my intelligence insulted.
You hear me, Blair, you watery son of a bitch? -

Thu, September 9, 2004 - 5:39 PMI don't know...As Jello Biafra said about George H.W. Bush and Dan Quayle, "I'd rather have a dumb Nazi in power than a smart one."
I think of Clinton as a good liar and W. as a bad one. The comfort zone produced by the former seemed far more dangerous than the agitation produced by the latter. -
-
Re: What makes you Bill Hicks angry?
Fri, September 10, 2004 - 12:11 PMAs much as I respect Jello Biafra, I view such comments as completely self-marginalizing. It's certainly overly simplistic.

Re: What makes you Bill Hicks angry?
Tue, April 5, 2005 - 10:09 AMInsurance companies and their "pre-existing condition" clause. I have two neurological conditions, one of which was congenital but not discovered until I was 25. After struggling with Blue Cross for almost a year to get it included, we finally told them to fuck themselves and looked for another company. Every single one we went to wouldn't cover either one after that because they were pre-existing. I am now on government related healthcare because it's the only thing that will cover these things.
Then there's the meds. One of the conditions (the congenital one, hydrocephalus) requires surgery that I can't have because it's too late, and there's no meds for it. The other, epilepsy, requires meds, except the one that's 99.9% effective costs 90 fucking dollars a bottle (and that's the generic version). So I have to settle for the one that's only semi-effective because I can't afford to cover the other one. I'm working on getting a prescription plan, so hopefully that'll help. Fuckers. -

Re: What makes you Bill Hicks angry?
Tue, May 10, 2005 - 12:49 PMThe balls-out, screaming bone-deep hypocrisy that seems to manifest in everything the ruling party has done over the last...oh, say 5 years. "Clear Skies Initiative", anyone? Tom Delay pulling the plug on his own dad after waiting a whopping 1 month, then trying to keep Terry Shaivo in egglplant status for more decades? Texas Attorney General Greg Abbot helping to spearhead "tort reform" (aka the "corporations get off scott free" Act) after first collecting millions in a lawsuit when a falling tree branch put him in a wheelchair while jogging? Republicans blocking hundreds of Clinton's judicial nominations, then acting like the Apocalypse is upon us when 9 of the Shrub's nominees get fillibustered?
Oh, and the myth of the "liberal media" (when all meaningful media is owned by giant corporations, who own the Republican party and set its true agenda).
I tried to think of a dick joke, in tribute to Bill, but can't think of one good enough at this time. -

Mon, June 20, 2005 - 9:20 PMBig, purple-veined dick joke (sort of), comin' atcha:
This guy and his wife are sitting around the kitchen table one morning, and the wife says, "Honey, I had the most amazing dream last night! There was this Christmas tree and it was covered in penises. Big dicks, little dicks, black ones, white ones, circumcized, uncircumcized, and at the top... was the perfect penis."
Of course her hubby asks, "And was that mine, honey?", to which she responds with a sheepish grin, "I'm sorry honey, but it wasn't."
The husband says, "Hey, that's funny. I had a dream pretty similar to that one. There was this Christmas tree covered in pussies. Hairy ones, shaved ones, loose, tight, ugly ones, pretty ones, and at the top... was the perfect pussy."
The wife asks, "And was that mine, honey?", to which the husband replies, "No. Yours was holding up the tree."

Re: What makes you Bill Hicks angry?
Thu, July 14, 2005 - 10:19 AM(I just found this tribe... hence the late reply!)
I'm finding that all of the meditation and other spirit work I've been doing is making me less and less prone to anger. While generally speaking, this is a good thing, it means that I rarely use the rant as an art form anymore. Sad!
What can still make me Bill Hicks angry and ranty:
1. My boss, on the wrong day. (we get along really well but she can be an utter bitch when she's stressed out. . . I save those rants for friends locked posts to my blog)
2. Lack of personal responsibility
3. Someone with a sense of entitlement. (No, Princess, the world does not owe you a damned thing)
4. That fucking monkey in the White House. (The BIGGEST in this list, the one that has inspired the most impressive, turbo, virulent rants over the years)
5. My mother.
I'll try to dig up some o' those rants and share 'em. Today, of course, I'm in a beautific, decidedly non-ranty mood, so I can't do one off the cuff at all.

The only way people like this would ever get any respect from me would be if they stopped being 'Stadium Gurus' and started walking the earth giving free and impromptu 'sermons' to people in exchange for a meal and a bed for the night. Like the geezer on 'Kung Fu'.
And anyway, how the fuck can anyone take a bloke seriously when he looks like the afterbirth of that 'Jaws' bloke in the James Bond films?

Re: What makes you Bill Hicks angry?
Sat, August 27, 2005 - 10:33 AMOkay there are a thousand things that make me bill hicks angry. Being that bill is gone somebody has to take his share of hatred. Hard job,but I have the time. So these are off the top of my head.
Entertainment tonight, ET insider, extra, and access hollywood. Okay when the hell did everyone decide they had to wallow in celebrities buisness? Did I miss that memo? Do actually think I care that Brad and Jennifer divorced? I swear if I hear another story about some anorexic star getting another tummy tuck or the like wise I'm going to go on a shooting spree. Also when did botox and the like become standard? What the hell happened to aging gracefully? And is looking like your a stroke victim an even trade to get rid of a couple of age lines? Are we, as a society so wrapped up in physical appearances? I know I'm not. Though I do shave my head to cover up the fact that I've been balding since I've was 17, but that's neither here or there.
Also, Tom Cruise. When did celebrities think they know more about issues that experts in the field. Hell all I want out of my celbrities is to be entertained. And being that their in the entertainment industry that shouldn't be a problem. But now everyone of those bastards decides to to take up a cause. I would be okay with it if they A. had a point and B. did the research. Now i can't say that Cruise doesn't have a point(he believes that as a society we throw medication to problem rather than actually figuring out what the problem is) but i've seen three year old spastics argue a point more eloquently. -
